De Mase Trucking & Rigging: Proud participants in CTPAT and PIP
Border security plays an important role in strengthening the international supply chain. Law enforcement entities like U.S. Customs and Border Protection are critical in these efforts, but at the end of the day, quality security requires the participation of principal stakeholders like importers, carriers, consolidators, and of course, trucking and rigging companies.
When the Security and Accountability for Every Port Act passed in 2006, it established a statutory framework for the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, or CTPAT. In addition, the law imposed strict oversight requirements.
What is CTPAT?
CTPAT is an important component of CBP’s multi-layered border-enforcement strategy. It’s a voluntary, public-private sector partnership meant to protect the supply chain, identify security gaps and implement specific security measures and best practices.
Businesses that apply for the program must present a comprehensive list of security profiles and action plans designed to improve security throughout the supply chain.
Aside from improving America’s national security interests, CTPAT makes it easier for member entities to get through border crossings quickly and efficiently. This is because CTPAT member entities are considered low risk and are therefore less likely to be examined at U.S. ports of entry.
What are the benefits of CTPAT?
Companies that become CTPAT partners experience various benefits, including:
- Front of the line inspections
- Possible exemption from Stratified Exams
- Shorter wait times at the border
- Assignment of a Supply Chain Security Specialist to the company
- Eligibility to participate in the Importer Self-Assessment program
- Priority consideration at CBP’s industry-focused Centers of Excellence and Expertise
- And more!
How long has De Mase participated in the CTPAT program?
We decided to join the CTPAT program in 2009. In the more than 10 years since we’ve established a set of policies that ensure transport safety for all of our clients. In fact, we regularly:
- Implement, follow and maintain security policies and procedures consistent with CTPAT minimum-security criteria
- Cooperate with the CBP and other law enforcement agencies in their efforts to ensure the safety and security of the supply chain
- Provide training and security guidelines for our employees, empowering them to be an integral part of the fight against human trafficking, terrorism, drug smuggling and other illegal activities
- Review and revise our practices as necessary to maintain an effective multi-layered security program
- Work with our business partners, service providers, and customers to protect the supply chain
What is PIP?
PIP, or Partners in Protection, is similar to CTPAT. It’s a private-public partnership designed to streamline and make border crossings more efficient for pre-approved, low-risk businesses that are recognized as trusted leaders.
